Who we are, what we believe, and why it matters
The Expert Leader is a team of curious, compassionate and highly experienced coaches and facilitators dedicated to unlocking the potential of people who are already exceptional at what they do, and helping them become just as capable at leading others.
Our path to here
“For me, the moment didn't arrive loudly. A leadership partnership that had worked almost effortlessly – built on trust, clear communication, and an instinctive sense of how to operate together – suddenly didn't. A new person stepped into the role. Nothing changed on paper.
The structures, the accountabilities, the reporting lines were identical. But almost overnight I felt untrusted, undervalued, and stripped of the autonomy I'd taken for granted. I assumed it was a trust problem. It took time to realise it wasn't.
What was missing was a conversation that had happened almost by accident the first time – about how we would actually work together. When the person changed, I'd assumed the system would hold everything else in place. It hadn't. The bond needed rebuilding, and I just hadn't known it at the time.
The research behind the relationships
After that experience, I did what comes naturally to me – I went looking for the research. I wanted to understand, properly, what makes a leadership relationship work. That inquiry eventually became the focus of my master's research: a structured investigation into how leaders working alongside each other in complex, technical environments to build relationships that actually function. What I found changed how I think about leadership entirely.
Trust matters, but it's one dimension of at least seven. Power and influence, how decisions get made, how expertise is leveraged, how accountability is shared, how communication flows – all of it shapes whether two leaders can work well together. And almost none of it happens by accident.
The relationships that work are the ones where people have, consciously or not, had the right conversations. The ones that don't are the ones where those conversations never happened.”
Rochelle Fittler, Founding Director
“For me, it came from the other direction – watching someone genuinely brilliant be consistently passed over in the rooms that mattered. Not because of what they knew. Because of how it was landing. The weight of that, the waste of it, was something I couldn't shake.
Neither could I forget what happened when something finally shifted for that person. When they stopped translating their expertise and started owning the room. The difference wasn't knowledge. It never had been.
Less framework, more mirror
I started paying closer attention to what was actually happening in the moments when someone made the shift from expert to leader. It was almost never a credential or a course that moved the needle. It was a moment of recognition. Someone reflecting back to them what they were already doing, but couldn't yet see in themselves.
So I started doing that deliberately. Less framework, more mirror. Meeting people exactly where they were, helping them understand their own impact, and moving them forward from there. What surprised me most was how often the people most resistant to leading were the ones who, once they found their footing, did it most authentically.
What this all leads to
Between us, what we've learned points in the same direction: the gap between expertise and impact is rarely about knowledge. It's about how that knowledge shows up in relationships, in rooms, and in the moments that matter. And closing that gap is learnable. We know, because we've done it ourselves.”

Rochelle Fittler
Founding Director
“Hi, I'm Rochelle. I help smart, capable people become the kind of leader others genuinely want to follow.
I spent more than twenty years working at the senior levels of Australia's Defence and Intelligence sector – as a Chief Information Officer, Operations Manager, and Senior International Liaison Officer. Roles where your technical expertise gets you in the room, but your leadership is what determines whether people move with you.
The moment that clarified everything for me: watching an almost-identical working relationship produce completely different results – same roles, same structures, entirely different outcomes. The difference wasn't the system. It was whether the two people involved had deliberately shaped how they'd work together. That insight – that the quality of our bonds at work is something we're each responsible for building – sits at the heart of everything I do.”

Jen Ainsworth
Principle Coach and Product Development Lead
“Hi, I'm Jen. I help people build the clarity and collaborative environments they need to step into the leader they're already becoming.
I spent two decades in the Australian Public Service building and sustaining high-performing teams across complex, diverse environments – the kind of work where the technical challenge and the people challenge are always, without exception, the same challenge.
What I've learned to look for is what's happening beneath the surface. Most of the time, what looks like a performance or collaboration problem is something quieter – a conversation that hasn't happened, an assumption that's never been tested, a person who hasn't yet been given the space to contribute fully. Finding that, and building the conditions for something better, is where my work begins.”

Lynn Moore
Founder , Chief Happiness Office Emeritus
“Hi, I'm Lynn. I work with people who are brilliant at what they do, and help them discover they're just as capable of leading others. Even when – especially when – they're not sure they believe it yet.
Over 35 years, I built and led technical and operational teams across Defence, Intelligence, and Cyber Security. I was part of the team that established Australia's national cyber security capability – demanding work, in complex environments, where getting it right mattered and resources were rarely plentiful. You learn a lot in those conditions about what it actually takes to bring people with you.
The moments I look back on most clearly aren't the program milestones or the capability launches. They're the ones where someone who had been absolutely convinced they weren't a leader – couldn't be, wasn't built for it – suddenly couldn't imagine being anything else. That shift, and creating the conditions for it, is where my energy goes.”

Peter Wardle
Leadership Coach & Facilitator
“Hi, I'm Peter. I help technical experts become effective leaders, without asking them to be someone they're not.
I spent more than thirty years across Defence, Intelligence, Cyber Security, and Regulation – beginning as an Air Force Officer and working through to leading some of Australia's most consequential government programs. I know what it means to be the expert who is also expected to lead, because I've spent most of my career navigating exactly that tension.
The moment that clarified my purpose: sitting with someone who was technically brilliant but completely stuck – not from a lack of knowledge, but because nobody had ever helped them feel genuinely seen as a leader. Once they did, everything changed. Creating that moment for people is what I do now.”

Warren Karle
Leadership Coach & Facilitator
“Hi, I'm Warren. I help people who are on the cusp of leadership – particularly junior and middle managers – take that step with confidence and clarity.
I spent thirty years at the centre of Australia's intelligence and security community – including senior roles at the Australian Signals Directorate, the Defence Intelligence Organisation, and the Office of National Intelligence – translating complex policy into strategies that delivered real, measurable outcomes across agencies and under pressure.
What I saw happen repeatedly in those environments stays with me: brilliant analytical, policy, and operational minds struggling with the leadership transition – not from lack of capability, but because nobody had helped them see that what they already knew was exactly the asset they needed. The moment someone makes that connection – when they realise their expertise isn't separate from their leadership, it is their leadership – is the moment I work towards.”

James Young
Team member and Associate Coach
“Hi, I'm James. I help teams and individuals think more clearly, talk more honestly, and move forward with confidence.
I came to facilitation the long way round, through research science and then a decade in Australian Public Service policy roles. That background gives me something harder to teach than technique: the habit of watching carefully before acting, and asking the questions that matter rather than filling the silence.
What I've learned to pay attention to is what's happening underneath the conversation. Most of the time, what looks like a planning problem or a collaboration issue is something quieter – a dynamic that hasn't been named, a perspective that hasn't been heard, or a question no one has felt safe enough to ask yet. Finding that, and creating the space for something better, is where my work begins.”
